A network engineer handles the work of installing, maintaining and supporting computer communication networks in an organization or between organizations. The main goal of the network engineer jobs is to ensure that the operation of the communication networks is smooth. This ensures maximum performance is available to the users.

A network engineer's job may either include working as a part of the IT support team of the organization or working externally in the IT consultancy firm with a number of clients.

The type of work performed by a network engineer in his job depends on the size of the company you choose to work with. In a large company, a network engineer may have a specific work for a particular area of the system. But in a small company, you may have to handle any IT-related problem.

The role of a network engineer may also be influenced by the type of network he works on. For example, the activities for local area networks (LANS) would be completely different from those performed for wide area networks (WANS).

The salary you get depends on the size and type of the organization you choose to work with. Self-employment and freelance work is also possible. But for that, you must gain experience in the field. The job can be stressful at times, especially when things go wrong. This is because the companies depend on their computer networks to a great extent.

The education background required for entering in a network engineer job requires a graduate degree in any discipline. A degree in computer science, electrical engineering, mathematics or software engineering would be an added advantage. Entry with HND is also possible. Post graduation is not essential but may prove to be an added advantage.

If you have a good work experience or some sort of training in this field, be confident. You may enter into the work front even without a degree. Experience of working in a team is also important.

It is expected that candidates should also have an up to date knowledge of the networking technologies. They should have the ability to think clearly, possess problem solving and verbalize good communication skills.
